Local Pastry Chef Wins Philadelphia Wedding Cake Competition
On Monday, March 28th, Philadelphia was the “sweetest place on earth” when over 17 of the best pastry chefs from the Philadelphia region participated in the City of Hope’s “Let Them Eat Cake” competition. The theme for this year’s event was “Animation”. It was held in the Regency Ballroom at the beautiful Loews Hotel in center city Philadelphia, attracting over 400 brides in search of the perfect bakery for their wedding.
Local Pastry Chef Melissa Miller, of Granny Schmidt’s Custom Cakes in Whitehall took home the coveted “Best Taste” and “Best in Show” awards. Melissa created Wall-e from Disney’s Pixar out of cake made of Chocolate Cake with Salted Caramel filling. The cake’s design with its industrial look stole the show. The cake took over 30 hours to complete. This movie is one of Melissa’s favorite Pixar movies due to the fact the first 45 minutes of the movie has virtually no speaking at all. It is all based on emotion.
The all-star panel of judges included Cake Wars and Sweet Genius personality Ron Ben-Israel of Ron Ben-Israel Cakes in New York City.
